Inspiration Board

Every now and then, I need some fresh tunes for reading, blogging, walking, and coffee drinking. My favorite music tends to include country, folk, and good old fashioned soul. This month's playlist lies more on the folky side, which really gets me in the mood for the beautiful blossoms of spring.

1. Lantern by Birds of Tokyo (I first heard this song recently at night on a road trip. This seems to be a rising hit! Perfect for inciting motivation, empowerment, and courage.)

"In darkness I leave
For a place I've never seen
It's been calling out to me
That is where I should be"

2. Sleepy Little Town by The White Buffalo (This might be cheating, but I first heard this song in one of Nicholas Sparks's latest films, Safe Haven. The lyrics and tinny guitar really make me feel like I am in a small town, which is my secret dream, especially in a huge city. A great reminder of peace and home.)

"You can feel it in the air
You can catch it if you dare
And all you got to do is wait around
For you and I in this sleepy little town"

3. First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes (My friend and coworker introduced me to this song on an overnight shift, and it masterfully walks the line between raw and lovely. Makes you believe that we can all fall in love.)

"And you say 'This is the first day of my life
I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
But now I don't care I would go anywhere with you
And I'd probably be happy' "

4. Guiding Light by Foy Vance (I went to see the insanely talented Ed Sheeran play last year in Hollywood, and Foy Vance was his opening act. Vance's sound crosses the soul of gospel music with the spirit of folk music. Check out the version of this song that he collaborates with Sheeran on. A perfect reminder that friendship and family pull you through.)

"When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light."

5. It Is What It Is by Kacey Musgraves (Kacey's musical style lies somewhere between country and folk, and I love it. Her successful song writing history shows that she has a knack for telling real stories. Reminds you that romance without friendship and meaning falls short.)

"Maybe I love you,
Maybe I'm just kind of bored,
It is what it is
Till it ain't,
Anymore"

Enjoy the music!
